Femara use?

Hi Ladies,

I am starting on Femara tomorrow, and I'm worried about how my doc is handling this with me. I've read about the possible birth defects, and asked if my husband and I shouldn't have sex while I'm taking Femara- to which my doc said it doesn't matter. I also asked my doc if at the end of the months treatment on Femara if I should have an ultrasound before going back on the drug (if pregnancy is unsuccessful) and he said a home pregnancy test would be sufficient. I am worried about the possibility of birth defects...any info anyone out there could give me would be very much appreciated. I don't know where else to go. I want to trust my doctor, but would rather be safe than sorry, too.

I'm glad you asked about Femara because I will be starting on it in 2 days and after reading about it on the internet, I too was freaked out. Good Luck

I've also been taking it for three cycles and really like it.. but defintely understand your concerns, like tina and candy said it has a very short half life, so its out of your system way before you have the chance to become pregnant taking it... I have also been using HPT's at the end ot the cycle to check for pregnancy and then AF comes before starting another round of it.. its a good drug, it helps with cervical mucus (doesn't dry it up like lots of fertitliy drugs) and works great in some people that other drugs didn' twork well on.. it also doesn't thin your lining like other drugs can.. everyone reacts differently to every drug though!  let us know if you have other questions and good luck! :)

Hi.  I understand your concern.  When my doc first prescribed this, I of course went to the internet for info since she didn't provide any and I came across a lot of information about birth defects.  Like Tina said, it gets processed very quickly by your body and will not still be around when implantation occurs.  I was sure to monitor my temps and also use HPT's to make sure I definitely wasn't pregnant before starting another round.  This may help - If you search for the Southern Ontario Fertility Technologies and look for "downloads", they have 2 great pamphlets on Femara for infertility.  I found them to be incredibly informative.  Best of luck to you!

I certainly understand your worry. I read that, too and was concerned. But, the good thing about Femara opposed to other meds is that it is completely out of your system the day after you take it. It is pretty unique in that fact. Others linger for a month sometimes. Normally, you won't even ovulate until many days after the last pill was taken. I take it cd2-6 and o around cd14. The Femara is long gone b4 the egg is even released, let alone implanted. I hope this helps.
