Is it safe to take metformin after one is pregnant?

I'm 37 and been trying to get pregnant for almost a year now without success.  My doctor put me on Metformin.  And I have been taking it for 3 months.  My period is couple days overdue now.  Not to be disappointed again, I have not taken a pregnancy test yet. I am wondering, if I do get pregnant this time, should I stop taking Metformin.  Is it safte to take Metformin after pregnant?  Will it cause any harm to baby?  Thank you very much!

Thank you all for the advice!  I am on 1000 mg/day.  The doctor recommended 1500mg, but I don't feel well take 1500mg, but working my way up there.

Do NOT stop taking your metformin.  The risk of miscarriage increases if you stop taking it.  Keep taking it until you talk to your doctor!  Good luck :)

Hi Ladies...

What is the dosage that you are taking? I'm interested to see what is an average or norm. Thanks for any information you are willing to share.

No don't stop taking your metformin... My doctor actually told me to keep taking it until I was atleast 12wks pregnant! Studies show that it may help reduce miscarriages in women with pcos!

Good Luck!!
