Secondary Infertility

How many of you are suffering from secondary infertility? would love to hear your stories. i just got a negative on my blood test for my first IUI and am just feeling beyond perplexed as to what is going on with my body. I got pregnant so easily with my son and have been trying for #2 for over a year and a half and nothing. not even a chemical pregnancy in all this time. i am 38 and dr's are attributing it to my age but i know so many others that are my age or older and are getting pregnant in the blink of an eye. what is going on with me? and why is this happening to me?

I just wanted to add that I am also trying for number 2.  I am almost thirty, have a son who is almost 7 1/2 and my husband and I have been trying for 6 1/2 years.  I have lost five pregnancies, two of which were ectopics that also caused me to lose my tubes.  I have just started my birth control pills for my next, and last, IVF.  Starting stims in mid March, and will hopefully be having my retrival and transfer by the end of March.  I will be turning 30 at the begining of April (on the 9th) and am keeping my fingers crossed that I will be getting the most AMAZING birthday gift ever.  Good luck to all of you who are trying, may your prayers be answered in 2010!

thanks for responding. I feel better knowing i'm not the only one whose is going through this stuff.

nshapland - ugh - i hate when people tell me i should be happy with 1 or if i tell them i'm struggling to have another one they respond with - well you should be grateful you have your son. I get that but it doesn't make it any less painful especially when you want another one so bad. I really just want to give my son a sibling. I don't want him to grow asking me why he doesn't have any brothers or sisters.

melon3 - we have the exact same situation. 2 year olds that we had when we were 35. we started trying for #2 right before i turned 37. I just don't get it! i have a friend who is pre-menopausal and is having twins. How can a pre menopausal woman get pregnant and i can't???

Jillian - good luck on your IUI! keep me posted.

trying hard for number 3 - let me know what your RE says. I too am seeing a top Fertility dr and i get the sense that there is a formula they all use based on situation/results of testing and age although you've done the IUI before so who knows.

My next step is to do another IUI with clomid. If the second time isn't a charm, i'm going to look into IVF even tho our insurance doesn't pay. i hope i don't have to go that route because i hope to see a BFP before that but I have read so many success stories on this board about those that did IVF. I'm just waiting for AF to arrive. I should have gotten it yesterday but due to the darn progesterone suppositories, she has not reared her ugly head yet.

let's all keep in touch and i will say plenty of prayers for all of us and hope we get our bfp's VERY soon. how wonderful would that be?

I like all of you have a 4 year old daughter. We have been ttc since March 2009 with no luck. I went off BC in March and had Af's until July 30 which was my last one!!! My doctor finally reffered me to my OB that I had with my first one and finally will be having my appt on March 11!! :)  I had all the u/s and bloodwork done with doc and all looked well so lets just hope my OB  puts me on provera and clomid right away to get the ball rollin so to speak.  For me trying in the spring/summer ***** as my hubby is a heavy equip operator and isn't home much (long hours) and possibly miss ovulation.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed and wish everyone the best of luck.  Happy dancing all

That is the comment I hate most of ALL : be grateful you have one!  I am SO grateful to have my daughter, but like you said it doesn't keep me from wanting another so badly.  I am 1 DPO today as well.  I am starting progesterone tonight and will have to keep it up for the next 2ww.  The thing is I have to take a pregnancy test in 13 days (because if i just wait for AF to come, it probably won't happen because of the progesterone)...NOT looking forward to it and trying not to think of it.  Of course, I am very hopeful after my first IUI yesterday, but you know how it is after months and months of negative HPTs!

It is hard when people say to be thankful for having one (or two or three) because we ARE!  We just know that we have more love to give and want to be moms again!

Well, I am about 1 DPO (maybe?!?).  I am not following any type of chart or anything this month, but I go to the RE next week to just talk...

How about all of you--are you doing meds, natural, following charts...anyone around 1DPO and on the aweful 2WW?

I do enjoy the comfort of friends that are going through the same thing!

Hi Chris, I'm 39 (will be 40 in May) and have been trying since last year. My daughter is 11 and we've had two miscarriages--one in 2001 and one two weeks ago.  We didn't really try between the first miscarriage and when we started trying again last year. I am kicking myself for not trying--but so many of my friends got pregnant at 40 that I thought I'd be fine at 39 : (
My acupuncturist told me yesterday that a) if I want it too badly it won't happen and b) I should be grateful that I have one child b/c some people have none. I know this is true but it did not make me feel any better.  I love my daughter and want desperately to give her a sibling.
I can't believe how hard this is.
Good luck everyone

Hi,
I also have the same story. I have a daughter who is 2 and was conceived the second month of trying!!! I have been trying for number 2 for over a year!!! It is very frustrating as I thought it would happen quickly again!!!
I am also 38 and the RE says that is the only problem stopping us from having another! I was 35 when I had my daughter!!! Im having an HSG soon and if that doesnt do the trick then we are going for IVF.
I agree that we should all stay in touch and see what happens!!

Good luck to you all xxxx

Same story here.  I have two boys that were all too easy (uh-oh's) to conceive.  I am now hoping to have a third...and have been at it for 2 years.  I am 28 years old.
Worst thing for us--everything is normal.  Husband is fine.  I have had an HSG, pelvic ultrasounds, etc. and all is fine!  I had done 6 cycles of Letrazole with Ovidrel shots, 2 IUI's, and still nothing...so now I am off it all.  Just thinking if that didn't work, well, then it wasn't my time yet.  I did go in with some follicle cysts, but they weren't too hard to clear up...
It is so frustrating because our bodies should know how to do this!  But, I guess I always feel blessed to have experienced it--however, infertility is hard no matter if it is number 1 or number 4 you are after.
I am going to see a top reproductive endocr. soon, but not sure what route he will take me on...
Anyways, it is such a BIG question...I pray for all people that go through both infertility and secondary infertility.  My OB said that 50% of his cases are, indeed, secondary infertility!
We should keep this going to see what routes we all take, and hope we all end up preggo soon!
Good luck to you ladies!

Hi Kris!  YOu are definitely not alone.  I have a 3 1/2 yr old daughter and have been trying to conceive for almost two years now.  I had a miscarriage in Feb 2008.  This has been the hardest thing I've ever had to go through...especially hard because most people don't seem to think it should be hard since I already have one child.  I am only 26 years old.  I got pregnant with my daughter the first month we tried and then the second pregnancy was a complete surprise.  After a year of trying to figure out what has been keeping me from getting pregnant, I finally found a great RE who I love and was diagnosed with PCOS.  I am having my first IUI tomorrow.  Since you have been doing IUIs, i assume you are working with an RE already, who has done all the standard testing on you and everything to rule out obvious problems?
I am SO sorry that you have to go through this.  I understand how you feel and know that there really isn't anything that will help until you finally get that second baby you are so hoping for.  I hope that will happen for you very, very soon
