Hi Sarah Kate
Thanks for your detailed prompt reply to my post which I found very informative :-)
Hi Sally,
Someone else will probably be able to answer and explain this in more technical terms, but in my opinion yes, this is possible. I think it is possible to get pregnant, for the sperm to fertilise the egg, and for the egg not to implant properly and come away before a missed period. These days with all of these early pregnancy tests, women can know they are pregnant well before a missed period, at this stage, very early days, the embryo is still trying to implant, if this fails and the embryo comes away, you would start bleeding as normal. This type of thing is known as a "chemical pregnancy" which basically means fertilisation occured but the embryo failed to implant. More commonly a woman will get a positive pregnancy test and start to bleed only a matter of days after her period is due - but I am sure it can happen before a missed period too - obviously you would need to have an early positive pregnancy test to confirm this. I do know a few ladies this has happened to. Hopefully this helps you, and if I have got anything wrong someone else will correct me, but this is as I understand it.
