fertility: I just need to know a small piece of information

Hi,

At the age of 16 I was diagnosed with graves disease, after years of medications and medication changes I had to have a total thyroidectomy because my antibody levels were 250 as aposed to below 30 were they were suposed to be.

I am now 23, I had the surgery 2years ago and now have hypoparathyroidism. I take 250mg of levothyroxine, 4ugs of alfacalcidol (vit D) and 8 calcichew fort d3 a day. All my levels are all stable and within a healthy range and have been for a year.

What are the chances of me and my partner being able to concieve?and what are our chances of me not miscaring and having a pregnancy that will go to term?

I have been trying to find some information about what my fertility chances are with my illnesses and the only information i can find is if you are hyperthyroid or hypothyroid or hypoparathyroid or graves disease I can't find anything that has a combination and it's really playing on my mind that i wont be able to have children.

It's starting to get me down, I just need some help with some information either one way or another so we can deal with it, are we setting ourselves up for the biggest change of our lives or are the people out there that have my disease that have got pregnant and have children??

Thank you both so much for your reply's,

I have tried to talk to my Endo and my Gp about it but because my partner and I are still waiting for the sale of our new house to go through and are not actively trying for a baby yet, no one seems to be willing to answer any questions we both have. The only answers we are getting is " we'll cross that bridge when we come to it" which really didn't help very much.

It's good to know that there is someone who has Graves and has had a baby without problems. I will definatly question Dr.Lupo  but thank you both so much the reasurance is great

I think you have a very good chance of pregnancy with no complications.  My mother had Graves and had iodine treatment to burn her Thyroid and she still had my little sister with no problems.  As long as you are taking your levo to regulate your Thyroid you should be fine.  If you are not ovulating though then you need to check your TSH levels to see if they need to be adjusted.  Your TSH should be between 0.3-3.0 for optimal health.  If you get pregnant though make sure your TSH levels are below 2.0.  That is what is healthiest for the baby.

Hope that helps.  Also, there is a Thyroid Dr. on this site that answers all Thyroid questions for free.  His name is Dr. Lupo. and he is great.

something to discuss with your endocrinologist for certain.
but if your hormones have been stable and you are ovulating normally, then there should beno reason you cannot conceive.  you may have to be monitored more closely and have your medications adjusted though.
good luck!
