Feedback from ENT visit...

Hi there!

I am posting the feedback and info here, and also on the ENT Comm forum.

I had the consult with the ENT (Otolaryncologist) and he is going to help me!  This man has been God-send to me!  He works very close to my GI and Surgeon on a daily basis!  WOW, I did not know that when I came to see him.  And he assured me that he will sort it out.  And I am very proud of Dr Cornel (that's me:) as I was very well prepared, had all my info ready and made notes and wrote down symptoms and some of my own diagnosis were right:  Epiglottis is swollen, gland is affected due to inflammation (not EBV related), it is GERD related and there is something physically wrong that is causing all my symptoms.

He did a fiberoptic-pipe-through-the-nose test (AIDA) and discovered that the MUSCLE that runs down the esophagus (it is attached to the Epiglottis and vocal cords, larynx, etc.) is significantly thicker than normal due to longstanding REFLUX and now it is actually secreating LACTIC ACID and that is what has been causing all of my symptoms!

The treatment for this:  Gaviscon 2 times a day as the peppermint in the Gaviscon will help the muscle to relax.  There are also muscle relaxant medication that you take 3x a day (Dialaxan, Amilothrythtelene?), but that is not an option as it will turn me into a SLEEPY Smiley.  Then there is BOTOX injections every 3 months and as a last resort:  surgery to cut some of the thickened muscle away.

I am very positive that I am finally going to get some help with my throat issue that has been haunting me for more than 3 years now!

He has arranged with my Surgeon who is going to do the Endoscopy today, to also do a DIALATION procedure to see if that would help somewhat...  I am going to take the Gaviscon for a while and give it some time to work and in about a months time, I'll come up again (we travelled 600km from home to get to Adelaide - closest Specialists) and even try the Botox.  I just hope the Botox needles slips and end up on my cheekbones and forehead too :)

Have a great day guys!  and I'll come give feedback on the Endoscopy soon.

Great news.  I had the tests as well some years ago, but it sounds more advanced now.  I'll say this, that my voice is much better after two years after the Nissen procedure.  We both had great results, so I'm betting you will feel better going forward with the new treatments.  Your posts have been important to let people know that GERD is a complex problem, it has a lot of causes, there are no easy answers, and a combination of diet, drugs, lifestyle changes, sometimes surgeries all contribute to solving the problem.
