effectiveness of fundoplication

Could anyone tell me how effective fundoplication surgery is? And what are the different types of fundopliction? Assuming that the surgery is a success the first time, what are future side effects, post op precatutions and overall effectiveness in the long run?

The reason I am asking this is because I have acid reflux problems, started 2 months ago, I responded well to panteprazole 40mg twice a day for reflux esophagitis but suddenly I have LPR, this leaves me confused as to whether the PPI's are helping me at all and if I need to take them daily for long term, I certainly do not wish to be on constant medication my whole life and I have a very strong urge to just tell my GI dr to give me a surgery so as to cut down the need for medications.

Hi there,

Surgery should not be done unless you have had some basic tests done:  i.e. 24hr PH study or Impedance study and manomatry.

Have you had an endoscopy to check for Hiatus hernia, etc.?

I have LPR as mentioned in another post- but my sister had the surgery- she has no ability to vomit now- that is a side effect and cannot be helped- even if u feel nauseous u cannot vomit- if u swallow a poisonous substance they cant give u meds to make u vomit- u have to have your stomach pumped- I have considered the surgery and as much as I vomit with LPR u would think I would do it but I dont think I could stand not being able to vomit

Hi and welcome to the GERD forum.

I can not offer insight on this surgery as I have not had first hand knowledge....we do have members that have and I am sure they will offer some insights.

Since ur issues is only a 2 month issue, I would suggest mayb trying a PH test and see if ur issues is high acid levels or if ur issues  is low levels as the symptoms can be the same as those with high levels.

IMHO I feel it is best to try and rule out everything b4 heading in  for ne surgery....not all conditions and issues can be resolved with surgery and sometimes more issues arise after surgery....so do more testing and talk to those that have gone thru this.

I wish u all the best.
