Hi there! Thank you for sharing your experience here. I also suffer from GERD. I was misdiagnosed with a hital hernia back in 2006 and a ENT prescribed me prevacid. When in fact my symptoms were from a allergic reaction to allergy drops a allergist put me on and I had to put them under my tongue.
Needless to say, I was naive and believed as we usually do when we are young a Dr. therefore, I continued to take the prevacid, in which later was switched to protonix. Recently, starting in July I started experiencing horrible indigestion episodes that would last for 2 to 3 days at times.
I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis and after reading what affect being on a proton pump inhibitor for a long period of time can do to people, causing hypothyroidism being one. I'm convinced that's what happened in my case. I'm the only one in my family with this disease, so I'm left to believe that was the cause. Therefore, I chose to discontinue the protonix on my own, until I visit the gastro. on Jan. 29th. I'm feeling worse than I did before stopping it.
After reading your posting above. Correct me if I'm wrong. With taking a proton pump inhibitor for so many yrs. on a daily basis, wouldn't open my pump back up on it's own by stopping the medicine and that could be the reason for me feeling worse now?
Maybe I'll check into a Chiro. instead of a gastro.
Hi and welcome to the GERD forum.
So glad this worked for u as I also have a hiatal hernia and have wondered about the procedure ......but not everyone with LPR also have a hiatal hernia....it is a shame ur Drs gave u meds with out checking u first as that could have saved u the time on all those meds.
I know we all need the digestive acids in order to break down foods....and those that take antibiotics loose all the good and bad, so a pro biotic is something to restore that natural balance.....
Please let me know how often u might have to replace the hernia...just curious.....I have heard it is easy to do for urself and wonder about that as well...thanks for sharing.
