Since the pharmaceuticals aren't working for you, try these natural supplements. My husband had chronic reflux for years, and these keep his symptoms under control.
1) Take a broad spectrum digestive enzyme capsule with each meal, everyday.
2) Drink aloe vera juice to help heal your esophagus and sooth your digestive tract. Also take some before bed.
3) When you feel heartburn coming on or reflux, take activated charcoal capsules to soak up the excess acid and gas.
You can get these at any health food or specialty vitamin shop. You can also try eating a piece of plain white bread when you wake up at night with reflux. Keep it in a baggy next to your bed. It seems to soak up acid really well and get rid of the gnawing feeling in your stomach.
One of the things that frustrates me is that you can find a negative for every positive. I have read negatives on each of the above. White bread is high acid. Rye bread is the lowest acid, almost neutral.
I agree with you on the white bread. It is an acid forming food, which is why it shouldn't be eaten as a dietary staple. However, on an empty stomach, used sparingly and as needed, my husband claimed it relieved his reflux really well, enough so that he could fall back to sleep.
