Diarrhea Following A Bad Fall/Work Accident

Hi all,
I suffer from not a very good digestive system at the best of times but 3 days ago, a staircase collapsed underneath me and I fell from a height of about 6 feet.  I am extremely lucky that my injuries appear to be superficial.  I sprained ligaments in my ankle, am badly bruised and grazed the entire back of my right thigh.  However, a few hours after the fall I started to have sudden onset diarrhea.  My temperature would rise and I would feel extremely nauseous.  It is waking me up early in the morning and also happening regularly from late afternoon on.  I feel wretched from it and don't want to eat a thing.  I am just wondering if it could be related to the fall at all?
Many thanks for your responses in advance

Hi there!

This is likely to be a viral gastroenteritis, unlikely to be related to the fall; which should subside on its own in 5-10 days. I would suggest taking plenty of fluids with added sugar and salt/ commercially available oral rehydration solution to compensate for the fluids lost. If the symptoms do not settle in 5-10 days or there is development of additional symptoms such as blood in stools, I would suggest an evaluation by a primary care physician for appropriate management. A visit to the ER may be considered if there are symptoms of dehydration such as dizziness etc.
Hope this is helpful.

Take care!

Hi there,
If there would have been any internal bleeding due to the fall you would have experienced blood in stool, hypotension etc.A complete evaluation will be helpful for detecting whether the cause of this diarrhea is related to the fall or is due to some other cause. Nausea can be seen after head injury due to any concussion and can be diagnosed through magnetic resonance imaging. Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration. See a primary care physician. He may further refer you to a neurologist or other specialist depending on your clinical findings. Do keep me posted.
Best luck and regards!
