Drank Too Much One Night, had High Lipase levels..Can I still drink?

Hi,

A month ago, not my finest hour...had a little too much at the bar and my friend took me to the hospital. Did blood work and told me I had high (1800) lipase and high amylase levels. I'm a 21 yr old male in college and while I socially drink, rarely do I get that inebriated.

Anyways, totally freaked my mother out and she didn't want me drinking again, citing that I'll die if I even have a little. A week after the incident, I had my lipase and amylase levels check and it was slightly elevated (lipase: 330). Now a month later everything is withing acceptable limits.

My problem is that while I certainly do not need to get extremely drunk, I would like to able to socially drink with friends and what not. My mother is being extremely paranoid and while I will be going back to my internist to ask him point blank I wanted to know what you all thought as I have scourged the internet and come up empty.

Can I drink even though I had such elevated levels (mind you, this was when I was still drunk at the hospital). Or do I have to give it up completely? I'm not talking blackout levels or drinking, but socially (a few drinks on a weekend night). While I do have a family history of liver disease, they came in the form of three uncles who were heavy alcoholics.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks
V

Elevated lipase and amylase = pancreatitis; something alcoholics get.  It can become chronic.  A few drinks on a weekend night may be TOO SOCIALLY for you.  Can't you stop at 1 or 2?  3 heavy alcoholic uncles doesn't mean you're immune from the family curse.  A "few drinks" could be heavy alcoholism for someone whose system can't handle the drug.  (yes, alcohol is a drug).
