Help please

I am 36 years old. I have a knot about the size of a baking potato (and hard) at the base of my left rib. It is very painful the pain use to go away but for several weeks not it has not. I have had a CT and an Ultra Sound both have showed nothing. Except when the lady was doing my ultra sound I saw a big white thing where the pain is. The ER doctor said it was a hernia. He wanted me to have surgery at the most two days later. My normal doctor said no but he did not know what it was. He wanted me to see a surgeon. So I did and he said no it’s not a hernia but I do not know what it is. So he is sending me to GASTRO. The pain gets to be unbelievable come evening time. It swells more then and feels like I have something under my rib. The top of my stomach is hard in a T shape down the front. If you barely rub your hand down the front of my stomach it will make me sick to my stomach. Please help me before I go crazy. I am at the point I just want someone to cut me open and find out what it is and FIX it so it stops hurting. Maybe then people will stop thinking I am lying about how much it hurts.

you're welcome :) yeah don't give up on the diet...it does take weeks before you feel some improvement so even though you're negative it still can be caused by that.  I was negative on 3 blood tests, and I took some soy/wheat waffles about a week ago and got seriously sick so I know i'm on to something and your clues of wheat help the theory too.  I'm also learning that my anxiety is causing most of my symptoms as well..basically your gut is telling you something is wrong/it doesn't like it and it's rebelling against it.  You just have to figure out what is the offender is (stress/food intolerance) and remove it.

I thank your for your post. I did have the test done and they showed negative. The Dr. said IBS was my trouble. I still say it has to do with the wheat and all because I have not had trouble with food when I leave it a lone. I have 2 family members with Crohn's too so we will see what happens. I have yet another test on its way this month. I am so thrilled about these tests I am jumping up and down. NOT!!!
Thank you again for understanding what it is I am feeling. At least I do not feel crazy!!

ha... (well not funny but just suprises me..) but welcome to the crowd..I had 3 blood tests all negative and 2 endoscopes and it'll all came back negative but once I took soy and gluten out of my diet my nausea levels are way down now.  I also have upper left and in the back.. it's basically gastritis is what you're having..or inflammed small intestine right underneath the stomach...

Anyway, don't avoid gluten yet until you do those tests..sadly you have to be "glutened" during the tests or you could get a false negative.  Also it's possible to have a food intolerance (like me..) and not be celiac soooo I HOPE HOpe hope you don't have celiac but least you have an answer.. the diet is hard..and if you need to lose weight that's the only..positive thing out of it.  Forces you to eat healthy.  

Anyway good luck on the tests Sterling!  But if the tests are negative..with doctor advice i'd just go on a wheat free diet and see what happens.

I had my appointment with Gastro yesterday. I finally have some what of an idea. It makes a lot of since when I read the information on line. It is called Cillac disease. No that is not spelled right. It is an allergy to wheat and glutin. I have not had the offical diagnosis yet but the dr said it can present like what I am having. I have 11 blood test to do next week and then they are going to send the tube down my throat the end of this month. To closely look inside of my stomach. I also have BAD reflux so they will be looking for cancer of the espogus (again spelling) So go to your dr and ask to see a GASTRO dr and get them to test you for this. it might be what has been hurting you also. I know I am not looking forward to hearing this diagnosis either. It means a total new way of looking at what goes in my mouth.

wow , i feel the same thing sterlingrose , almot feels like someone took a water ballon and filled it up inside you  left side under ribcage , but mine goes to the side and back . i cant lean left cause then it hurts , or when i sit i can feel something is there that shouldnt be . ive been exsperancing this for almost 3 yrs now . it just use to come and go and i would just put it off cause it really wasnt that bad , i guess you can say it was tolerable . but now its more frequiant than anything and more painful , i cant lay on my left side it hurts too much , if i lay on my back i can feel like theres pressure on the left lower section of my ribs (kidney area)  i get sharp stabbing pains . i went to my doc he said it was a misplaced rib in mu upper right area , and said if we fix this maybe the pain under my ribcage and back will go away, well i went last wed and now its just getting worse . so i made another apt for 2morrow .  I just dont know what else to do ,or say because ive told my doc this before and again he said it sounds like a pulled muscle . trust me i know what a pulled muscle feels like its a constant dull aching feeling pain meds and heat helps it , So far nothing has helped this , no heat, no meds , i even thought maybe it was gas and something to do with my bowels so i took milk of magneasiam , still nothing !!!!  It feels like something is pushing into my back and ribs and yes i do get burning sensations also but thats when i lean to the left or lay on my left side . i sometimes feel pain in my left should/ neck but its nothing like the pain under my ribs /back . I am pretty tolerable for pain , but this is just getting to painful for me . And with the feeling , if ya touch my back or side  its very tender  and i do feel some sort of small lump right below my ribcage , doc also told me it was muscle . i didnt think your muscle was small like that and felt like a small round ball ! !!!!! i have also felt like a cyst or maybe a fatty tumor on one of my ribs left side , its all squishy and it moves when felt . Anyways im getting so tired of this pain , its been going on and off for 3 yrs  and seems to be getting worse as the months pass by . But i do feel your pain .and your not alone in this there is alot of ppl saying the same thing with there left side . i wish you lots of luck to whats going on , and ill keep ya posted as what he may or may not find 2morrow .

Typical doctors!!!  See a GI specialist and see what their findings are, if the pain gets too bad before then go back to the ER and ask to be evaluated by a GI.
