Dr Watters I need your advise. I had roux-en-y hepaticojejunostomy 2 1/2 yrs ago. From time to time I get extreme abdominal pain with a fever and chills. And the last several times I have had these symptoms along with trembling. It usually last an hour or so. It just happened again last night.
The last time it happened was in July. The day after I went to my PCP and she sent me right to hospital for a CT scan and blood work. Everything was fine. Thankfully. My liver enzymes were slightly elevated which they have been since the surgery. I am a healthy 58 year old. I eat healthy and have my entire adult life. I need answers and the knowledge to avoid going through this every couple of months. Do you have any advice or insight as to the cause. I will be forever grateful.
The procedure is not without some longterm issues but is indicated to lower your chance of developing cholangiocarcinoma in the bile duct. I am sure that any surgeon qualified to perform these procedures has covered the reasons for the operation and post op issues. This is not your everyday, common procedure. The issues down the road relate to the potential for infection in the bile duct which patients must be aware of. Fever and right upper quadrant pain should be treated early with antibiotics to abort any infection in the duct. By and large though, patients do very well.
