Infection after gallbladder removal

I had my gallbladder removed three weeks ago (laparoscopic) and I now have an infection at the surgical site. I saw my surgeon yesterday, which is when I noticed some drainage and pain, but no fever. He was unable to find an opening, despite prodding around with a cotton swab for several minutes. So, he's instructed me to put iodine on the area a couple of times a day and to cover it with gauze. I've noticed that the pain has spread to a larger area since yesterday, which has me a bit worried. I'm just wondering if this is a common type of treatment for post-surgical infection or if there is anything else that should be done to treat it.

I'd expected to be put on some kind of antibiotics, but the surgeon apparently didn't think it was necessary. Since I don't currently have a PCP, I called his nurse again today, and she said that he must have thought the infection wouldn't require antibiotics. I guess I just don't understand how a topical treatment will take care of a spreading infection that isn't draining very well (especially when the surgeon himself wasn't able to find an opening!).  Maybe I should go back to the clinic and see a GP?

Thanks!
