Like hitting a brick wall ...

Been suffering from lower back, hip and left side abdominal pain for a year. Was initially given a lower CT scan that revealed a cyst on my left ovary. Was given BC ... pain continued. Went back to doc and was given an ultrasound (through tummy, not transvaginal) and was told "no cyst" and referred to Gastro specialist, who ordered an upper CT scan in November, which was unremarkable. Insurance from that point refused any other pre-certifies. Pain continued and worsened. Bowel habits changed from about Jan on to chronic diarrhea. I'm bloated and full all the time, can eat a fraction of what I used to and have gained weight despite by decrease in calories. I feel constantly like I'm about to start my period -- everyday, like blood needs to start flowing to feel better. Am 47 and haven't had a period for about six months. Returned to Gastro specialist, who did a colonoscopy and says I have spastic colon. Desipite increased fibert intake, pain continues and worsens. OBGYN did a CA-125 and CEA and levels are below average. Please anyone tell me if you've experienced similar problems and please help with advice for pushing docs and insurance company to find out what's causing these unrelenting symptoms. My dad's twin sister did not make it after she was diagnosed at 48. What to do?

S. Kaul, thank you for replying! I did return to my OB-GYN, who did an ultrasound. They found a black spot on my left ovary and are doing a laparoscopy on Monday. Hopefully, it's nothing but they'll find the cause of the pain through the procedure. I do appreciate the time you took to respond. This situation is maddening.

Hi there!

Well, without a clinical evaluation it would be difficult to determine the cause of your symptoms. Possibilities that may need to be considered include GI infections, inflammations, malabsorption, motility disorders, growths/ masses, hormonal/ endocrine issues etc. I would suggest initiating an evaluation with an internist, though you may need to see a gynaecologist and a gastroenterologist for detailed evaluation as well. After a cause(s) is diagnosed, it can be managed accordingly.
Hope this is helpful.

Take care!
