Pain in upper left side

I am 64 yrs old and have had pain in my left side for two years and no one can seem to figure it out, I'm hoping maybe someone will recognize the symptoms and be able to guide me in the right direction. The pain is under my left breast and radiates to my back. It also radiates down my left side. It seems to build up and I have ended up in the hospital a year ago and again this December due to the pain being so bad. The Dr's checking me could hardly touch my side without me coming right off the table. They give me pain pills and clean me out for a colonoscopy and endoscopy and then find nothing after the tests.They also did a CT scan of the lower left side and chest x-ray and found nothing.  It settles down for awhile and starts back up. I also notice more pain when I eat so eat very small meals, bread seems to be too heavy even one piece of toast. The Dr's keep looking at the colon but find nothing so I think that's not it but don't know what it might be. I have read things on line at various medical pages and find nothing that seems to fit the pain. It's getting very depressing and I am active and it is causing me to have to stay home many days. I would appreciate any ideas anyone has. Thank You

Thanks CalGal but the scopes showed just a few very small gallstones that they said should not be causing this and did not need the gallbladder out?

Km, you may want to consider asking your doc to check your gallbladder. I know that sounds strange since most people believe the pain should be on the right, but some people do experience left-sided pain. No one knows exactly why, but it does happen.
