Question

Hi everyone

Long time acid reflux sufferer here. October I had a sever pain in the abdomen which i thought was UTI . Took perscriptions for a UTI and started have URQ Soreness. I also had some major flare ups which i thought were acid reflux related (major back pain). I finaley went to my doctor and she sent me to get an ultasound. I have a dialated CBD 8 CM shoud be 6. I was then sent for a MRCP.(MRI) When i got home fridaty I had a message that the MRCP was normal and my PCP was referring me to another Doctor. I thought the other doctor was a Gastro (sp) doctor but when I looked him up he is a general surgeon. Now I cannot talk to my PCP until Monday it is driving me nuts why is she sending me to a surgeon is the MRCP was normal???  Any guesses welcome :) as I said I am driving my self nuts.

Thanks Reader

This is just a supposition, but when the common bile duct is dilated, it suggests that there might have been some blockage of the CBD at some point, possibly by a stone. Another possibility is a spasm of the sphincter of Oddi, the muscular opening at the end of the CBD. And since you've been having pain that could be related to your gallbladder, your doc may be covering all the bases by sending you to a surgeon.

These days, however, unless someone has some distinct stones, or a severely decreased ejection fraction (based on HIDA scan with CCK injection), many surgeons won't suggest having the gallbladder out unless there is clear evidence that removing it will help. If you're having something like spasms - which more people seem to be encountering - having the gallbladder removed won't help anything.
