unexplained epigastric pain

I am having terrible gnawing midsternal directly under breast bone.  It has been chronic for the last several years.  Comes and goes and will last several weeks at a time.  Egd was normal, colonoscopy normal, blood test (h pylori) normal, barium xray normal, gall bladder sonoi looked good.     All tests have come back normal.  Otc meds do not help.  I have not lost or gained any wt, bowel habits normal.  I have no nausea or vomiting.  Could it be something that was missed or possibly something that is ideopathic that I just need to live with?  Thanks,  Leigh

yes, gerd can for sure cause it.  I did not see egd on your list of tests.  It is the scope down your throat.  Mine came back neg but I am starting to think it might be gerd as well.  I am a high strung girl and you know how emotional females can be!  Have you tried otc meds like prilosec or nexium?  I am going to the drug store today to get some nexium, I have been using prilosec with no luck.  They are the same type of meds but sometimes different brands react different to different people.
My pain is exactly where you describe yours and I am unable to tie it to anything either.  Last trip to mexico I drank my share of margaritas with no problems at all.  I describe mine as very painful hunger pains, cause you know when you are hungry and your stomach growls and then gets worse, thats what mine does but its just a very painful gnawing thing that is up higher than hunger pains............
Pancreatitis is bad and very painful, it can cause major problems sometimes.
get you some otc stomach meds and let me know how it works for you,  Leigh

ya,,i had the gullbladder checked, they say its ok...mine is dead center, like right by my zyphoid proccess,,,and usualy extends into my back.
i dont throw up,or anything like that, its just like a cramp in my diaphram feeling!
it last a few seconds to a several minutes, and then goes away.
i cannot tie it to food or booxe or anything,i dont drink alcohol at all anymore, and then i was just a weekend warrior.
never smoked anything either.
ct scan/barrium/iodice
cbc
amalayes/lypase
liver
all checked and all negetive, not even a hint of a problem.
i had a buddy that developed pancreatitis from alcohol, and gets pain kinda like i do,but hes 1000 times worse,,lost alot of weight, and gets uncontrolable vomiting exct.
can GERD cause my symptoms you think,i DO experience reflux once in awhile that wakes me up when laying down.
please let me know what ya think...mike

Not a lot of computer sitting and not a lot of tight pants at my age.  I am 46. If yours radiates to back and kinda hurts more to the right it could very well be gall bladder.  It can kinda be difficult to diagnose sometimes. have you had gall bladder sonogram?  I know for a fact that mine is not back issues.  The type of pain and plus its to far to the front.  I am a nurse so it makes it even harder really.  I know too much but yet not enough!
