could i have ibs - gp thinks so but im not sure plz help !!!!

hi everyone , im 24 male and have been having alot of stomach / intestine problems for about 6months , my doctor thinks its ibs and a stomach ulcer but any ibs treatment i,e antispasmodics he gives me makes everything werse , i disagree that i may have ibs because i have been using alot of pain medicine since june 2009 i,e codiene , tramadol ,ibuprofen and amitrtiptyline for a nerve condition i have so i believe that it could be something else , my gp is reluctant to reffer me to a specialist or even for any g.i series tests - my symptoms are abdominal pain & discomfort ( whole abdomen , sides back everything lol ) , nausea vomiting cramps and occasional noises , i usually have constipation from a pudendal nerve damage i have but the antispasm drugs have given me the opposite and made all these much werse , does anybody have any ideas or suggestions ? another thing is my mum has had ibs for yrs and my symptoms are nothing like hers but i heard there is more than one type of ibs ? i dunno but id be greatful for a reply thanks . .

You don't need a referral to see a Gastroenterologist and with all your problems you should be under the care of a doctor whose specialty this is!  They can't "guess" at an ulcer they need to do an upper endoscopy to determine if you do have one, and treat you for it!  Ulcers can become cancerous so your doctor is being very negligent here. With IBS the medications do work, and you normally just have some bloating and gas pains when not taking the medication...nothing like you describe!  Please find a good Gastro doc and get the opinion of someone specialized in this area.  I wish you all the best.

thanks for both of your comments , really appreiciate it . i agree with mammo about my doctor being negligent ive been complaining for a long time about this , he does listen to what im saying but i dont agree with ibs coz i think if it was then id have had relief from the colpermin , mebeverine or alverine he prescribed me , im seeing gp again next week and im gonna ask again to see a gastro doctor , test me for things like cancer , colitis , celiac and other things i dont no much about , i havent even had a stool examination done either so im gonna have to get some things sorted , thanks again for your comments .

Make sure they have tested for Celiac disease.

For your constipation, have you tried Miralax?  Try it when you are at home.  Start out with one capful in the a.m. and see if that brings relief.  If not, try a second capful at bedtime.  You can go up to 1 1/2 capfuls.  Make it with water or juice.  I think water works better, but it makes it taste like distilled water a little, and juice hides it completely.  Letting it sit there for 30 minutes before drinking seems to make it work better.

If you can't get relief from that then the best one for me is Amitiza, but it is very, very expensive.
