Moxie, I checked with a friend who has had some experience with 'fussy' eating babies and children. Here is her reply to me:
"Some forms of Prevacid have milk in them. She should have the pharmacist at the hospital confirm that the form being given is milk free.
If I recall, Neocate is totally safe for milk and soy allergies, but not corn. Maybe this poor baby is allergic to corn? I haven't looked into this in a long time so I can't recall which formulas are corn free. The only one I can remember is Alimentum RTF (Ready To Feed; premixed liquid) though the mom definitely wants to confirm. Hopefully the doctors at the hospital have easy access to corn free formula to give it a try. I wonder what she's being fed through the NG tube"
Daughter is already on Neocate and Prevacid twice daily. Doctors at hospital and GI doc said they've never seen anything like it. She has mild reflux at best. She's had endoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, ph monitoring, MRI, ECHO, Biopsies of colon and esophagus, and numerous blood tests and urine tests. They can find nothing wrong with her. Now they want to put in a G-tube in a week or so. Right now she's feeding through an NG tube. I'm so upset I don't know what to do. We work with her every few hours. She quit breastfeeding at 4 weeks because she was so fussy. Finally got her eating after 2 days in hospital with the bottle. Doctors are baffled. She acts hungry but will not take the bottle; however, she will suck on a pacifier or a bottle with nothing in it easily. She is now only take 1/2 oz to 1 oz at every feeding. She is 9 weeks, 11 lbs (put the weight on with NG tube) and 23 inches long. She has been getting work since 5 weeks of age. She went from 2-3 oz a feeding to current feedings.
Moxie, you need to consult your pediatrician about this. She may be allergic to something in the type of formula or breast milk that she's currently being given and may need to be put on something that can be easily assimilated. Make sure you check both sides of the family to find out if there are any food intolerance issues such as celiac disease that run in the families. If you're breast-feeding and ingesting an allergen-provoking substance it could be passed through the breast milk and causing your daughter problems.
