I've met people allergic to Benadryl (or the generic, which is Diphenhydramine). You may have developed an allergy to the cigarettes, too. I know if I get a full whiff of cigarette smoke, I'm sick for days.
My doctor suggested I myself switch to Zyrtec, which is a different medication. You can also try Allegra, which is also a different medication.
Stay away from Pseudoesphidrine (Sudafed), because it will raise your BP more, which you definitely don't want more of. It's also the most common decongestant and is not an antihistamine.
If you're feeling this badly, though, you should see a doctor for evaluation, just to be sure what the problem is.
