Pain in arm days after having an IV

Four days ago, I landed myself in the ER due to an adverse reaction to an antibiotic. When they hooked me up to the IV, it was the most painful one I’ve ever had. It hurt to the point that I was shaking for fifteen minutes afterwards and the discomfort persisted the entire time it was in my arm.

Now, my arm still hurts to bend. It’s not severe pain, but it’s noticeable, and it’s something I’m feeling a bit in my hand and wrist as well. (This has improved though). There’s no swelling or lumps or anything, just a very slight bruise right at the site.

Is it normal that I’m still feeling pain so long after the IV was removed? Did they maybe brush a nerve or something when they stuck me?

Just wanna make sure I’m good!

It is quite possible that whoever put the IV wasn't as experienced as they should have been but, if all you have is some slight bruising, think about icing it for 15 minutes, then 15 minutes without the ice, 15 minutes with the ice, and so on until the pain stops for a while.  If the pain persists, and I really hate to say this, go back to the SAME ER and ask for the head nurse and show her the affected area.  She will most likely offer some course of treatment or she will have you see the doctor.

It also could be due to they hit a muscle, again, that could possibly cause the feelings you are having.

Hello, it sounds like they may have hit a vein or a nerve, this can cause the symptoms you are having. If it continues I would certainly let your GP know.

Sounds like they punctured a vein.  Maybe I’m not using the right term.  But your IV shouldn’t hurt and it shouldn’t burn going in.  You may feel the temp of the fluid going in but it’s not painful.  I’m so sorry this happened to you.
