The Emergency Room at the hospital is for emergencies.

A lot of the time the Emergency Room is full of people who have a problem that is not an emergency and abuse the services of the Emergency Room.

Some conditions are clearly an emergency and need immediate attention.  A health problem that is persisting is not classed as an emergency, but still would require medical attention all be it sometimes an urgent appointment with your own doctor.  If in doubt, a phone call to the paramedics to assess whether the condition is an emergency is helpful.  In the UK we have an out of hours doctors available that can give advice whether the condition is such that warrants an urgent hospital ER visit.

The onset of severe pain, chest pains with breathing difficulties is classed as an emergency.  More information can, no doubt be found, on the web with regard to the problems that would require urgent ER attention.

In my doctors surgery, they have put up a large poster giving people information with regard to what needs urgent ER attention and what conditions can be dealt with the pharmacist or the doctor.

A urinary tract infection would not warrant an ER visit.  But a urinary tract infection that got worse with severe pain, high temperature, passing of blood and not being able to pass urine with the belly size increasing would be termed as an extremely urgent case for an immediate ER visit.  Just to give you one example.

Hi. How are you? You know, sometimes, as we get older, especially, WEIRD things happen....seriously. What I would do as soon as you can is to call his doctor and explain exactly what you just said! The doctor may wish to see him which would be good. If that doctor does not help, then take him to the Emergency Room t the hospital when it is occurring. That would be the best time. Good luck and I will pray for your Dad. You take care too and thankyou for being decent to your Dad! Happy holidays and please let us know what happens with him....ok? Take care.      Sue

Hello boyka94,

Thanks for letting me know what the problem was and I presume that your dad was given the appropriate antibiotic to kill off the bacteria and he is now well again.

Do tell your dad to take a urine sample to get checked at the lab a few days after he has finished his antibiotics to ensure that the bacteria has now all gone.

Urinary infections can become quite serious and can also cause someone to exhibit signs of confusion.  The problem is that sometimes there are no typical symptoms of having a urinary tract infection like pain on urination and a person can start to feel quite unwell.

It is always a good idea to get checked out by the doctor if there are any concerns.  And your dad did the right thing to get medical advice with regard to his severe sweating which in this case meant that his body was fighting some type of bacteria.

Should urinary infections happen frequently, it would be wise to get further investigations done by a urologist.  People who have diabetes can be more prone to getting urinary infections and a person who may have kidney stones could also get more infections, especially when a stone starts to move (stones can be as small as a grain of sand).

Drinking plenty of fluids as mentioned in my previous message, is also very important.

Best wishes :)

As the doctor has prescribed an antibiotic for your dad and he has experienced urinary problems, this will explain why your dad has been having the bad sweats.

As well as having a urinary problem, does your dad have any pain in the middle part of his back which is near the rib cage?  If so, he may have a kidney infection.  A urinary tract infection is an infection that is anywhere along the urinary tract which starts in the kidneys and goes right the way through the ureter, bladder and urethra.  The urethra is the urinary pipe that is located in the penis.

Problems in the urinary tract can be caused by infections and also kidney stones.  There is no way of knowing for sure if someone has kidney stones.  Only imaging (xrays or ultrasound scan) would indicate if there were any stones or not.

Glad to know that he is being looked after and will have blood tests taken.  As your dad has a urinary infection, a blood test should also be taken to check his kidney function.

Tell your dad that after a few days after finishing his antibiotics to take a urine sample to the doctor for this to be sent to the laboratory to check that the urine is clear of any infections.  The best way to do a urinary sample is to catch the mid stream of urine when he goes for his first pee in the morning.  To do this, you pee a little first, catch the next bit of pee in a clean container (you can get a urine sample bottle from your doctor's surgery) and then finishing off peeing into the loo.

Another condition in men who get urinary problems can be from the  prostate gland.  No doubt the blood tests will also detect if there are any hormonal changes that could indicate prostate problems.  Your dad's doctor will be able to examine your dad's prostate to make sure that that is OK.  If a problem is detected either by an examination or from the blood tests, he will be referred to a urologist.

In the meantime tell your dad to drink plenty of fluids and especially water.
2 litres a day is usually recommended, he may need to drink a little more if he is still sweating a lot.  This will not only help to flush out the bacteria, but also keep your dad hydrated.    The doctor will be able to give advice on the amount your dad should drink.

Le me know how he gets on.

Best wishes.

If the temperatures go fairly high (fluctuating fevers) and then keep going up and down, the chances are that your dad's immune system is fighting something.

I presume that the doctor did examine your dad's ears, throat and lungs and things there were fine.

You do not say what type of bloods tests are being carried out.  No doubt the doctor has ordered these to find out if there is any other problem.  You will have to wait and see what the result of the blood tests are.  Depending on the results, if anything is found, the doctor will be able to treat your dad appropriately.

Tell your dad to ensure that he does drink plenty of fluids so that he does not become dehydrated.  2 litres of water is usually recommended, but his doctor may advise him to drink more.  Because your dad is sweating he is losing fluids through that, and it is important that he drinks to replace loss fluids.

Does your dad experience any other problems,  for example going to urinate a lot, having problems to urinate, or have any other symptoms?

It would be good if you can keep me updated and let me know what the blood results are.

Best wishes.

Having sweats after a hot shower is quite normal.  This is the body's way of cooling down.  Tell him to reduce the water temperature when he showers.

As long as his day time temperature is fine and he has not other symptoms, then there is nothing to worry about.

Fluctuating levels of temperatures with hot sweats and then going cool can indicate that an infection may be present.  But usually there would be other symptoms too depending on the infection.  Bacterial infections can be treated by antibiotics, but viral infections need to run their course.
