Rapid test after indeterminate result-please help

I'm a female who had 7 encounters of unprotected intercourse  with a person of unknown status over a five month period, but who I thought was ok. I am no longer in contact with him.

6 weeks after the last encounter I had an Elisa and a Western blot. The Elisa was reactive, the Western Blot came back indeterminate. The lab person told my provider he didn't think I was positive, but would need to retest in a month. He told my provider it happens sometimes with women who have had kids.

Yesterday (4 weeks later at 10 weeks since last encounter) I went to a testing center where I could have anonymous testing done. My Clearview 1-2 rapid test came back negative, and they drew blood for the Western Blot and Elisa to be sent out which I won't know the results of for a few weeks.

I have lost so much sleep over this and causing so much turmoil. I have 2 questions:

1) Could there have been something the lab person was seeing in my indeterminate Western Blot which would make him think it would ultimately be negative, or is that just a standard thing they may say to try and not get me to worry, and

2) How much comfort from the negative rapid test I took yesterday since it was at 10 weeks and not 3 months?

Thanks for the honest answers/educated speculation.

I have retaken the Western Blot (and I think they are doing another Elisa as well) and am waiting for the results.

I'm just wondering how good of a sign it is that the Clearview 1-2 done at planned parenthood was negative at 10 weeks... Since my Elisa was positive at 6 weeks (and the WB indeterminate at 6 weeks) I'd take it as a GOOD sign that the Clearview rapid test was negative at 10 weeks, but I don't understand the science involved to know if one has anything to do with the other.

I realize I am just asking for speculation, but hopefully educated speculation based on stats or experience.  Should get my hopes up at all from the negative rapid test, or just pretend I never took it?

Thanks so much, and I so appreciate this site. I've read through the archives and know the repetetive questions must get old, but couldn't find this question specifically.

Rapid tests are not used to confirm any tests. Either retake the Western Blot or take an IFA test.

Hi Teak,

I'm not understanding your response... I thought a positive Elisa then had to be Confirmed by a Western Blot.

My Western Blot came back indeterminate... Does the rapid test being negative 4 weeks after the indeterminate Western Blot  have any validity at all?

Just wondering if I can breath a little easier while I wait the next two weeks out, or if the rapid test I just took is essentially worthless... Thanks!

An indeterminate is neither a negative or positive. Testing is done by two ELISA and a Western Blot. If the two ELISA tests are positive.
