Hey GoodFellas 2001
When I went for my 10 week test it was a saturday. They told me the results would be in on Friday. I was losing my mind and didn't sleep the entire week. I went in on Friday and the nurse told me everything looked good. I felt instant relief. Then he looked at my sheet more closely and said, hmm.................it looks like they only ran syphillis, your neg for syphillis. He had actually read my six week negative hiv test. I instantly lost my mind and was screaming in my head. He told me to come back wednesday. All I could think about was how maybe he did not want to be the one to tell me seeing as it was Friday and a beautiful day and he didn't want to break the news to me then and ruin my weekend. I also thought they needed more time to do a confirmatory test.
I went in on Wed and once again was told Your negative. I asked, was that for the blood drawn on xx/xx/xx they said no that was from your six week. Were still waiting on the results. By this point I was a complete mess. Anyhow the next day I got a call from the health department. I called back and asked what it was all about. They said I would have to speak to so and so but it was urgent because it was a health matter. I was put on hold for 15 minutes, the entire time suffering extreme anxiety. The nurse finally came on and said everything was okay and that I was negative. They decided to call me since they had screwed up the requistion for the test.
so relax, everything is probably fine, sometimes it takes a while to get results for whatever benign reason.
I was told this where I took my test as well - they basically have a huge machine they fill up and start. Sometimes you are lucky and there's room in the machine for your sample on the next run. Othertimes there's not and it has to wait for next time they run the machine which might not be every day. It's not an indicator of anything. Your risk of becoming infected in the way you describe is low - she would have to be infected, and even if she was, from what you describe the transmission risk is low. The 6wk neg test should offer further reassurance until you get the conclusive result.
labs usually run these tests in batches. it can take anywhere from 1 day to a week.
