Blood spill

Hi - you read a lot of conflicting things on the net about HIV and I suppose a lot of it is driven by ignorance - not stupidity - but just a lack of understanding. A lot of people fear HIV and contracting it and in the past I have been one of those due to my lack of understanding. In the process of educating myself and passing things I have learnt on to people I know who are experiencing worries I came up against a situation where I didn't really have the facts in order to explain the chances of a risk. Basically I was walking on my lunch break and next to my shoe noticed bottle cap sized blob of something that appeared to be wet blood (almost like someone had a head wound and bled out a bit or has spat out a load of blood) - but then me and a friend (who has a fear of Blood) started to worry after the incident that there was a good chance I had stepped in the blood and then when removing my shoe in the office and changing  into my indoor shoes I had transferred it to my hand where I have a few nicks and scratches from biting my finger nails. Basically to improve my understanding and decrease my ignorance I would like someone in the know to explain the risk here and why the risk is of that level? The more I understand about this the better I will be at not reacting like this.
Many thanks.

Hi, the risk to contract HIV is from unprotected insertive vaginal/anal sex, sharing IV drug needles or mother to child not from what you describe.
