Elisa 2nd generation 6 week test

I'm a male and had sex with female(not anal), twice inbtwo days about six weeks ago.  I got a cold sore, had it before, and nasal congestion that lingered for a while, maybe it went away a little, but i cant remember with all the anxiety.  I remember getting sinuses after, mild cough and yellow mucus for two days.  I am a smoker and had these symtoms before when i cought the sinus.  My coworkers are also sick, but i felt like my symptoms took unusually longer   i also sweated at night after i first cought the cold and went into deep anxiety.  My sweating stopped after we both tested negative three weeks after exposure with anti body tests, , 2nd gen.  I tested again at six weeks, still negative   my symtomps are gone but i still have a little congestion and mucus.  How accurate are 2nd gen teats at six weeks?  My stomach has also rumbled more than i remember and i dont know if anxiety is doing this.  I have been waking upbwith dry mouth for about two weeks now, less dry when im calmer before bed.  Thank you in advance for your answers and time

Your negative is very indicative. Irrespective of the generation of the test at the 6th week, a negative is very unlikely to change ahead. I promise, your 12 week's going to be another negative.

Are you sure you were tested with a 2nd generation Elisa? Nowdays all test used are at least 3rd generation and in Europe and other countries 4th generation. As you're in the US, I don't think they have used less than a 3rd generation test.

Positive, this was their reply: "We use the ELISA screen using the 2nd generation."

I took another test at 50 days, antibody in home test kit.  Negative, but i still have a little congestion and mucus.  Could it just be allergy season?  Everyone around me is sick.  Also stomach noises are still around.

3 months for a conclusive test. 6 weeks is a decent test but not conclusive.

Thank you for the encouraging words, Mike.  My nasal congestion lingering on is what's causing my anxiety.  Perhaps it is just a bad allergy season, most of my colleagues and family members are sick.  Thanks again for your words and time.  Truly appreciated.

Took a naat test at 8 weeks.  Waiting for results end of next week or midweek after, they told me it takes 5-10 days.  Couldn't wait for 12 weeks for anti body.  I feel like the anxiety is causing IBS and stomach growling.  I had ulcers last time I went through this, it was ruled that I was infected with h y pylori and I was treated for it.  I don't get stomach aches now, but ever time I stressed during and after treatment, I got hemorrhoids and my stool texture/color changed.  I feel like my anxiety is making my bowel movement worse.  I wake up with dry mouth and a minute after I stress, my stomach starts rumbling.  I read somewhere this could be a HIV symptom, wish I never read it, feel like reading about that symptom made it worse.

Just so you know nasal congestion is not HIV indicative, it is not mucus producing.

Your symptoms are irrelevant and no indication whatsoever of your status, they sound nothing like early HIV infection, which would not last this long.  In addition if your symptoms were related to HIV your test would have been positive or at least inderterminant.

Your 6 week test is a good indication, I expect you latest 8 week test will also be negative.

In future, save yourself the worry and just use a condom.  Sex lasts a few minutes but HIV lasts a lifetime.

Zamzam, in times of deep anxiety and distress, your words are both euphoric and inspirational.  I can't begin to tell you how big of a hypochondriac I am.  I have dated this girl for a while now, my insecurities from experiences of the past had me isolated from relationships.  I felt comfortable with her after the condom broke last year and we both tested negative six months later.  During this time, I developed stomach ulcer.  I felt like I was over my anxiety and trust issues, so we decided to have unprotected sex since she tested negative before we had sex and so did I.  When the cold struck two weeks later, anxiety crawled back under my skin and it's having a major impact on my relationship.  She's tested twice after our encounter, but I still can't find peace.  Your comments are appreciated.  I hope you get some good Karma you way.  Best Regards!

You have a cold mixed with a ton of anxiety.

Maybe it might be helpful for your to consult with somebody who can help you work through yoru anxiety, it can be very helpful and help you understand where your worry really stems from.

If you and your girlfriend have both tested negative over the last 3 months and neither of you have been with anybody else then you can't possibly have HIV.  You do however, sounds like you have some major trust issues going on, find a good therapist and talk it through, it can really help.

Called the clinic today and they said it could take another week for results.  I don't know why my anxiety won't stop and I keep waking up with a dry mouth and some nights I sweat, chest and upper area.  The girl I'm with swears she hasn't been with anyone in the last 7 months, and she tested negative twice, once three weeks after we had sex and another 35 days later.  I tested negative for antibody generation 3 with her at three weeks and again by myself on generation 2 elisa at 6 weeks.  I'm dying from anxiety here, I do have trust issues.  What are the chances that the NAAT test I took could show positive?  She swears she hasn't been with anyone.  Her negative at three weeks and 35 days and my negative at 6 weeks, is that a good indication?  Thank you in advance for your reply.  The next few days are going to drag....

(FYI: NAAT tests are for early detection (first 1-4 weeks)- it was unnecessary for your situation. Antibody tests are the gold standard. You should expect the NAAT test to be negative.)

All you are doing by continuing to test before 12 week is fuel your anxiety. 6 weeks is highly accurate and additional tests aren't going to provide much as added confidence. While you can be fairly confident that you don't have HIV based on your tests so far, it's the CONCLUSIVE result that you want at this point. It's stressful to drag oneself in for a test and it's stressful to wait for the results. You would actually be much less anxious if you could simply drag yourself away from HIV forums, HIV googling, testing, and keep yourself busy until your 12 week test (which you should expect to be negative).

Really? Counselor told me this was a non-diagnostic naat dna test and would be conclusive at 8 weeks.

That is not correct. 12 weeks is conclusive according to the CDC and FDA.

Joggen, is the information current?  I heard from two different counselors that a NAAT(RNA/DNA) at 8 weeks is conclusive.  That the test looks for the virus itself.  They advised that I do the NAAT test since both my 3 week and 6 week tests came back negative.  The girl I'm with also tested negative at 3 weeks and 35 days after exposure.  I'm more confident in my NAAT test being negative now, although I still have to wait until next week to receive it.  Are you suggested that a NAAT RNA/DNA test is not conclusive?

PCR-DNA Tests

Neither the Abbott RealTime nor the Roche COBAS AmpliPrep/COBAS TaqMan HIV-1 assay is intended to be used as a donor screening test for HIV-1 or as a diagnostic test to confirm the presence of HIV-1 infection.

I spoke with a counselor again, who stated the window period for NATT is 2-4 weeks, and testing for it anytime after is highly accurate.  I'm getting mixed answers on this and is causing more anxiety before I get my test results.  The girl I was with was negative 35 days after our exposure, I was negative 6 weeks after, I know the results are highly unlikely to change, but my anxiety due to a prolonged nasal congestion after I got the cold and sinus for a few days has made it worse.  Are you positive that a NAAT DNA/PCR test is not conclusive at 8 weeks?  Do you have any sources?  It's been 7 business days since my NAAT, still waiting for results.

A NAT test is a PCR-RNA test not a PCR-DNA test. NAT tests are not standalone tests and have to be used in conjunction with an antibody test.
