Skin Contact with HIV + blood

Hello,

My father has hiv and has been undetectable for 8 years now (takes atripla). The other day he didn't know his finger was bleeding and the blood was dripping onto a grocery bag that was next to my arm. I accidentally touched the bag and got some of his blood on my arm but I didn't have any cuts or open wounds maybe a micro tiny scratch. I immediately washed my hands and arm. Now I know that hiv can't live long outside its host. Was there any chance that I might have been exposed? I have been obsessing over this for days now thinking what if I somehow the blood got into my system? Even though he has been undetectable for years I'm still scared. Please assess my situation.

No risk at all.  You and he would both have to be severely bleeding in order for it to be a remote risk - enough blood that you'd both be seeking medical attention.  Perhaps you should discuss your fears with your father, and maybe go with him to an appointment with his infectious disease specialist.  It's important that you understand the risks so that you don't live in fear.  The only realistic risks are:
1) having unprotected anal or vaginal sex, or
2) sharing intravenous injection equipment.

Thank you for your response. It gives me a huge relief. I was super stressed and thinking any little symptom I had was related. I will go with him to his next appointment and talk to his doctor.
