HIV test confusion

Hi All,

4th Gen ( HIV Ag/Ab) test done at 28 days post exposure will give conclusive results ? If yes , why hospitals are asking us to do the test in 3 months or 6 months?

Hi Anusherpess,

To answer your question.
Most experts and HIV specialists do now accept the 4th Gen test is conclusive at 4 week's.
Why then did I say 4 to 8 week's?
I am going to current BASHH guidelines.
In the past, they recommended retesting at 12 week's.
In November 2014 they updated their recommendations and reduced it to 8 week's for high risk exposure.
They still said that the vast majority will test positive by 4 week's and a retest should not need to happen.
The official organizations are slowly making progress with their guideline's ( such as the CDC).
A 4th Gen test is conclusive at 4 week's.
Hope this cleared this up.

The test is conclusive at any time at OR beyond 28 days. That means if you take the test at day 29 or day 999, or day 1,345, and so on... (with no other exposures) your test result is conclusive.
