Hiv test negative for 18 years then posituve

Dear all

I was reading an article online about this 48 year old man that had his last sexual encounter 18 years ago
He claims he hadn't had any sort of sex since and tested negative many times since and last time he tested neg was in May 2008
Then a year later he tested positive which was confirmed with 2 additional tests
He claims he has a rare strain and what's more worrying in the comments one other guy claimed the same that it took him 15 years to seroconvert
And we're here debating over 6,8.10 or 12 weeks
That really freaked me out
I thought he wasn't being truthful but he claims he's was on obama's campaign and is an aids activist
Why would he lie
I'm really freaking out now!! Has anyone heard about this??

He must have an undetectable viral load all this time or he'd be dead.
If he didn't know he was infected then he wasn't on meds for it.

Not convinced.

If true (which I don't believe), you speak of 1 in 10,000,000,000,000,000. All strains are picked up tests. To get a rare strain you have to get it in places like The Congo.
