Hello,
I was recently tested for HIV. The test was titled "HIV 1/2 antibody screen" and the result was "negative by elisa". My understanding is that if I waited 3 months before getting tested, I could rely on my result. When I talked to the nurse on the phone, she told me that usually you would have to wait 6 months to be sure.
P.S. - I know my username says NY but I was tested in Connecticut, I don't if that makes any difference.
Does Connecticut have different tests? Was I given the wrong test (in other words a 6 month test) instead of the usual 3 month test?
Please give me your input.
Thank you

In an adult, a positive HIV antibody test result means that the person is infected, a person with a negative or inconclusive result may be in the “window for 4 to 6 weeks but occasionally up to 3 months after HIV exposure. Persons at high risk who initially test negative should be retested 3 months after exposure to confirm results
Tell the nurse to take some refresher courses.
