needle stick

Hi dear members of the forum, need help urgently.

I was stick by a needle which was left abundant while I was clearing rubbish outside the compound of my house. It is a public playground. I observed some liquid in the needle but could not confirm whrther it contained blood. the stick was deep inside my finger and was bleeding.

I ignored it at the first place as I have seen article in this forum saying that hiv virus is not infectious outside its host but I started to worry now as I believe most hiv transmission is due to sharing needle amongst iv drug user.

I was there for about 10 minutes and the worst case scenerio, the needle was left abundant for more than 10 minutes. My question is whether hiv virus still active after 10 minutes outside its host? and secondly, can hiv transmit this way?

Please help, I am so anxious now and need answer to sleep tonight. Thanks a lot.

like i say, reading similar posts, the risk is something like 0.003 % which is better than 99% you are'nt infected, and this is in a health care setting when a nurse or doctor has just withdrawn blood and pricked themselves straight away from a patient...however i am not an expert and am only going by what i have read. I hope this helps...

Hi all, thanks to all of you for answering. I got a great answer from Doctor Edward and will get a combo hiv 1&2 +p24 antigen (duo) test on 3rd october. Will post my result. I have a question about different of needle stick and blood transfusion.

I appologize that my question may not be related to my exposure but just wondering and I think it must be helpful to many people especially those undergoing blood transfusion.

Blood transfusion involve blood from blood bank that is kept in a cold blood bank with probably long period of time. Theoritically if hiv virus exist, it should be inactive after leaving its host for so long and moreover the cold temporature of the blood bank should render hiv virus inactive and thus not infectious anymore. So why should screening still compulsory for all donated blood and why is there cases of infection through blood transfusion?

There has been no confirmed reports of someone getting HIV from a needle stick outside a health care setting.

Hi Vance, I lost my sleep last night. As I see your name as the top answerer, can I have some answer from you? Just to confirm whether hiv virus still active in a needle after 10 to 15 minutes?

Really need help to sleep tonight. I keep on torturing myself (thinking) every second. Really need answer from you. Please, just one.

Thanks a lot guys. I was stick by the needle while I was pushing a rubbish beg and the needle was somewhere beside or under the beg. I am not sure whether there was injection involved. However I am very sure that the needle was abundant over 10 to 15 minutes as I was present for such a period.

I comfort myself thinking that should there be any hiv virus, it would be inactive by such a period as Teak, Vance and Lizzy mentioned before hiv virus is not infectious outside its host. For transmission amongst iv drug user who share needle I guess the virus still active as the sharing take place immediately without gap of time.

I am not sure whether my point of view is valid and I will keep on staying at this plateau stage of anxious. At this moment, there is some minor infection. This is an accident but I still cannot forgive myself. Thanks a lot anyway for your answer. God bless.

reading the other similar posts and replies by lizzy lou and teak etc...it has t be injected in the blood stream in order to carry a risk.

as far as i know, there would be no risk even if there would be blood on the needle cuz it has to be injected, and you need a big amount of blood to enter your body to become positive.
