parotid gland

Dear Dr. Could you please comment on a description of parotid swelling? I have tmj dysfunction (the jaw) and I have no apparent swelling, but do have pain behind the jaw and under the earlobes. I cannot feel the gland anywhere in front of the ears, but do feel what seems to be tissue behind the jaw. Is  the swelling common? Is it obvious? I was tested by home access a year and half ago - negative - with no exposure since. I am a white female
