very scared! (warning long post)

Hi doctor,

I am a 27 year old straight male. On 1/19 this year I had intercoarse with a girl that is a friend of my friends fiance' ( I had a cold at time of intercoarse). The condom that I used broke and I was in her for about a minute or maybe two at the most until I realized it broke. I think it was two days after I had a slight tingle and burn to the tip of my penis and slight tingle when I urinated. So I am very nervous already and went to the doctor, got tested for chlamydia and gonarea and urniary tract infection, the doctor gave me antibiotics for all, 3 pills total I took them and the tests came back negative a couple days later anyway. Now a couple days later I started to feel a tingling-burning sensation in my upper inner thighs and groin but tip of penis felt better but still irratated and now I feel a little dizzy.  I called the Dr. at this time and explained my symptoms he said" it could be herpes if there are blisters"Now I am pretty paniced thinking I have herpes but no blisters showed up. I called the girl I had sex with and asked her if she had anything, she said she didn't,she gives blood every year and had blood work done in the past but recently went to the dr. because she had a white spot in her throat, but dr. said its nothing and told her to take advil and she said she was fine. So I relaxed a little bit, the cold eventually went away but my inner thighs and groin where still pretty irratated but still no blisters and no rash and tip of penis was fine . But thighs where irratated when I walked and my belt was painful on my groin area when I sat down. The pain seemed to get better probably after a month of  the intercoarse, until I got a really bad sore painful throat, with dry mouth, and still dizzy once and a while, very irratable and the thighs started to get irratated again with the burning sensation and now I am fatigued. I went to the Dr. (a different Dr. I don't have a regular Dr.) he said my throat was really red and he put me on antibiotics for 10 days, I didn't tell him about the thigh and groin problem I had. The throat got a little better with the antibiotics but still a little sore even after the anti-biotics, but I had no fever during this whole time, but I started to not sleep very good waking up in the middle of the night with a mild sweat and areas like my arms, thighs ,lower legs and top of feet felt like they where sunburned. Now I am very worried and looked at different symptoms online and the one that I a was the most worried about in the back of my head  like most people was hiv, and I started to read symptoms of that and got really freaked out.  Now this is two months after intercoarse I went back to the dr. about my throat and this time I told him areas of my body felt like they where sunburned( I live in WI and its its winter) he didn't know what to tell me about my skin but he put me on a stronger anti-biotic for my throat he said my limp nodes were not swollen on my neck but I am not sure if they where last time I went to the dr.  So right now my symtoms are sore throat, dry mouth, fatigued ounce and a while, night sweats once and a while, sunburned like skin  that seems to switch around in areas including top of arms, lower legs and top of feet, top of back, chest, and stomach, not sleeping well, dizzy, irratable, irratated inner thighs and headaches.  I am on anti-biotics right now and no I am not allergic to them as I have no alergies. I do have bad anxiety and I worry alot, but  these symptoms are real and I really never had them all together like this and I know symptoms don't say much on hiv and alot of them are saying I'm just sick but I am freaking out , I am to scared to get tested right now, I know I eventually have too but I called planned parenthood and they said its like a month wait. This has been going on for too long. My question is do you think this is an std? Obviously I am the most worried about hiv,  thats why I put it on this board.

Hi there,

Your sysmptoms are not HIV specific.  One cannot base on signs and symptoms to link HIV infection. The only way to know if you are infected is to do a HIV blood test.

Since its about 8 weeks already, I recommend you test at 12 weeks after the last possible exposure for a conclusive HIV result.

I would also suggest you stick to one doctor and tell him all your problems, do not hide information from him/her.  The doctor will than be able to treat you accordingly and apporiately.

Cheers!
