The problem is though, not all internal mammary arteries are free of disease and are able to be used. The surgeon checks them for flow during surgery and if the flow is insufficient, they will not be used. However, you are correct in what you say about veins, they last an 'average' of 10-15 years. Veins are much weaker than arteries. You also have to hope the surgeon puts them in the right way round :)
lots of bypasses fail mainly because the use veins from the leg instead of using your mammary artieries which have a lot better track record than veins because veins collapse
The stent slipped from the doctors hands? I've never heard of this before. It is very rare for a stent to be put in the wrong place and the doctor must be incompetent. I think there is something not quite right in what they are telling you here. If one bypass didnt work, how can they feel sure a second attempt will? I know some people have gone through several bypass procedures before it worked, but I would want to know exactly why it failed and why they couldn't get the stent in the right place. I would be questioning how competent the doctors are.
