Echocardiogram Results

I recently had an echocardiogram and 24 hr holter momitor. I've received the "results" of the echo, not the monitor yet. What I was told about the echo was that the left ventricle was functioning normally but there is some mild valve issues that are not too concerning now. What I'd like to know is what questions I should ask. What is so important about the left ventricle that that is the only heart chamber that is referred to and should I know what the issues with the heart values are? I am waiting for the holter test before calling with questions, but it would be very nice to know what questions to ask.

Thank you.

It is unusual for a an echo test before there is an evaluation of the EKG results.  However, the questions you would ask depends on your symptoms and questions related to the results of the EKG and echocardiogram.  The results of the test will be commented on the report...then you may have questions for clarification if necessary.

What are your symptoms?  Do you have a health history of arrhythmia or shortness of breath?  Prior test results if any.  Are you on medication?

Thanks for sharing and if you have any further questions or comments you are invited to respond.  Take care,

Ken.

Thank you for questions to ask. I was uncomfortable with just the mention of the left ventricle. What about the other three? I don't know what you mean by some of the terms you used for instance, focal wall movement? aortic arch?

Thank you for your response. It has provided me a springboard for questions to ask.

Reason was that I passed out while walking my dog and ended up in the ER. Usual battery of neurological and cardio tests recommended. All of which I've had in the past...all normal.

I would want to know the following;

1. What is my EF%. This is the amount of blood pumped out of the heart with each beat. Normal is between 55% - 75% and is a good indication of how effective your heart is.

2. What are the sizes of all my chambers.

3. What is the measurement of the walls of my left ventricle along with the septal wall. Anything over 1.1 cm is considered high.

4. What was my pulmonary artery pressure. Should be less than 35 mmHg

5. Was there any focal wall movement abnormalities? This may indicate damaged heart muscle.

6. What is the measurement of my aortic arch?

I'm sure some one will add to the list.

Good luck,

Jon

The left ventricle pumps blood to the body, the right to the lungs... the valve issue could be some leakage..  nothing much to add until you get ECG results.  Why did you do the echo and Holter?  symptoms or routine exam?
