Ginseng: "Other side-effects can include nausea, diarrhea, headaches, epistaxis, high blood pressure, low blood pressure, and mastalgia. Ginseng may also lead to induction of mania in depressed patients who mix it with antidepressants".

That is also my doctor's opinion when I inquired about a herb!. Thanks for bringing that information forward and a reminder of those so inclined.
ginseng is a stimulant and will increase your heart rate, ive not heard of the other
Ginseng can cause heart palpitations. Gingko, as kenkeith notes above, is reputed to have anticoagulant properties. They both are drug-like herbs with active effects. They are not placebo-type substances. Traditional Chinese doctors have been using both of them as medications for thousands of years. Anybody who takes either one of these herbs should think of it as practicing self-medication. One should use the same level of caution -- or more so -- with herbs as with prescription pharmaceuticals. For someone who is totally, 100% healthy, maybe there is adequate margin for error in using these types of nonstandardized medications. But for someone who already has a significant medical problem, there is probably less margin for error. I believe that therapeutic herbs should be legal to buy and sell. They have a place. But I also believe that people should make sure they know what they are doing when using herbs. Herbal medicine should not be taken lightly, just because it is "natural."
