Irregular Heart Beats Three months after mitral valve replacement

I recently had a mitral valve replacement surgery, after my surgery my heart had a number of irregular heart beats. PVC and runs of taccardia ( i think thats how its called) the doctors started me on sotalol. 80 mg twice a day. i was also taking coumadin but have recently stopped it because the doctor only wanted me on them for three months after surgery.

Will this irregulaity ever stop. will i be able to get off the sotalol aswell. beccause i hate pills. i just want to feel normal. what am i to expect

Apparently you have a bioprosthetic valves and the risk of blood clots are not as likely and therefore  do not need life-long anticoagulant treatment.

If the rhythm disorder is tachycardia (ventrcular fibrilation),  and if you have coronary artery disease with a low cardiac output sometimes an ICD is implanted to reduce the risk of a heart rhythm out of control. and the  was ventricular fibrillation and he has coronary disease and a low EF then an ICD probably would be indicated. There is a lot of data that would support this approach as a life saving therapy

For a statistic according to data from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality-sponsored study published in the “Journal of Cardiovascular Surgery”, close to 50 percent of complications from heart valve replacements are cardiac-related. These complications can include heart attack and the development of an arrhythmia, or irregular heart beat. Both of these complications can be fatal so it may be wise to have an ICD.

>>>>>Sotalol is the help normalize heartbeats, and that may reduce risk of a dangerously fast heartbeat.

>>>>Hope this provides a perspective that helps you understand your questions of concern.  If the medication is effective, then there may no need for further treatment, and if you are your doctor decide an interventional therapy is of benefit, then treatment other than medication would be a consideration.

Thanks for sharing, and if you have any further questions or concerns you are welcome to respond.  Take care and I wish you well going forward.
