Just diagnosed with dilated aortic root

Recently diagnose via TEE with a dilated aortic root (aneurysm) w/mild leakage.  I know there is no cure -- it won't go away... and I want to avoid open heart surgery as much as possible.  In addition to current standard treatment plan of beta blocker & statin meds, what else can I do, take, to stop or at least slow down the progression of this condition?  How long is it possible to live without open heart intervention?

Met with my cardiologist today (3/13/09) and he further expanded on the results of my TEE - moderate leakage of the valve (which inturn produces enlargement of the heart and aorta because of the added effort it has to make to pump blood).  Treatment plan is to maintain blood pressure low with meds and monitor closely with CT scans.  If within 18 months, there is an enlargement -- then open heart surgery is needed.

I'm really worried about this open heart procedure and would like to avoid it as much as possible.  :(

Good to know.  Thanks kenkeith.  :)

Has anyone read up on the supplements L-Arginine and CoQ-10?  Just came across a book by Stephen Sinatra, MD (cardiologist) who talks about the benefits of L-Arginine as a vasodilator and was wondering if anyone had personal experience using these supplements.

As previously stated control any high blood pressure.  If you are a smoker, stop smoking. Maintain your ideal weight and eat a healthy diet....avoid salty food, don't add salt to food and avoid foods high in fat and cholesterol. Exercise according to your health care provider's instructions...lifting heavy weights may be avoided and not included in any exercise routine.  Get enough rest and learn to use relaxation methods to help reduce stress.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge.  But besides the obvious medical treatment plan, what else can I do to prevent this condition from getting any worse?

Blood pressure needs to controlled within normal limits or less.  Generally, when the aorta root exceeds 4.0 cm the condition is considered to be an aneursym, and when the size reaches 5.0 cm there is an recognition for possible intervention.  An aneursym can grow between 0.05 from 6-12 months.
