Mitral Valave repair/replacement

The patient is my dad who is 73 yr old diagnosed with Mitral Valve Prolapse, Severe MR. AF with FVR. treated PHF. Approach: Right Femoral Pressure: Femoral 126/67 (84) Flouro time: 5 min. And he is very healthy with no other issues. He has heart murmur.

Based on the above information is there a possibility of fixing a valve by repair rather than replacement. What are the chances of repairing the valve in his case. Couple of doctors are suggesting replacemnt due to his Age. Is that true? Any suggestiions are highly appretiated. Doing a TEE tests can we tell if the valve can be repaired or not. Hoping for an early reply.

Thanks
Vamshi

What is AF with FVR treated PHF.  Repair or replace is not an age issue.  What is related to age and valve replacement is what type of valve would be appropriate.  A biological valve would be the best choice for an older individual and is not recommended for a younger person as the expectation for the valve is less than 15 years.  A mechanical valve lasts longer but requires a lifetime of taking blood thinners due to the risk of blood clots.

Sometimes the valve can be repaired depending on the underlying cause...repair  doesn't require open heart surgery and there is faster recovery time.

Thanks for sharing, and if you have any further questions or comments you are welcome to respond.  Take care,

Ken
