Pain in my heart

I am having stabbing pains in my heart. Also sometimes it feels like pins piercing it. And other time it feels like something is just pushing on it. I saw my family doctor about it in 2000. He dis ultrasound and cleared me. It has bothered me on and off through the years but recently I had a terrible cold with much coughing. But the pain is continuing and not subsiding like it always has subsided. And it is a wider spectrum of new kinds of pain sometimes feeling like my heart is actually being grabbed. Any ideas, comments, or suggestions?

Thank you. I have had the pain for over a decade. I noticed an increase after drinking products with Ginseng. The pain would always normally subside after a short bout and remain gone for very long periods of time even through heavy exercise and or stress. The pain now is changing and abating but this time has continued on and off for many weeks whereas in past times it was only on and off for a few days. I have been quit smoking for nearly 2.5 years. I recently lost a lot of weight dieting. This particular pain became more pronounced after I did sit ups two nights in a row both times right after dinner. So I call that as the incidents leading to the pain becoming more prevelant. So probably I should have an Angiogram by a Cardiologist......?

Sharp pains like that are rarely due to heart disease especially if they are short lived.  There are various other causes of pains like that including musculoskeletal pain or pleuritic pain (pain caused by lung issues).  Based on your history with the recent cold and cough it sounds like you are having pleuritic pain which can be caused by irritation of the lining of the lungs.  This is usually benign and will go away with time, however if you are really concerned and it doesn't subside as your cough improves, you should seek medical attention from your physician.

Sharp, jabbing pains are usually considered either arthritic or GERD in nature, but pushing or pressure sensations are considered as possible heart or GERD issues.  The fact that you have have been coughing suggests that your discomfort could be because of mechanical issues, eg, coughing could cause some pain in the sturnum.  It's not easy to sort out chest pain.  If it continues, I'd suggest you ask your doctor for some nitro pills or spray, and if the pain goes away when you take the medication, it could be heart related.  That said, be ready for a really intense headache.  Another option is to ask for an Angiogram, the gold standard test for arterial blockages.  Certainly, the fact that you feel like your heart is being grabbed would be a worry.
Usually, heart problems are accompanied by unusual fatigue, and also discomfort when walking briskly and climbing stairs or hills.  Have you noticed any big differences in your exercise regimine?
