hi. i am 20 years old. before i have my ECG and D echo done because im having fast beats and at times shortness of breath ad pain in left chest.. first, i have my ECG and diagnosis was sinus tachycardia. she had me take up propanolol (10mg) to normalize the beating and i can say it worked.the doctor requested for a T4 (thyroid function test) to know if there iis any abnormality in my thyroid and the result was normal. then i see my doctor again and told me to have 2D echo, and so i did. no other diagnosis was made except sinus tachycardia. before undergoing 2D echo i stopped taking up the propanolol for almost a month. what would that mean?

now i count my heart rate at times, when im at rest it is about 75-85 bpm. and goes 100 bpm after exercise. during the 2D echo no unusual thing was found in my heart. its just that i have 120 bpm at times even when im at rest. since the doctor found no abnormalities in the structure , no further tests were requested.

They had to run an echo scan to see if the heart looks unusual in any way, things which give clues to the cause of the tachy. However, there were no clues given from your scan which is a good thing, you don't want damage. What is your heart rate on average when you are resting?  The Sinoatrial node is a group of cells on your heart which acts like a pacemaker, timing the heartbeats. This is where your problem is probably coming from. If you feel no symptoms then I doubt if the Doctors will do anything. You are still quite young, maybe it will just sort itself out with age. Infants have a heart rate on average 110-150 but slows down with age. Yours may do the same. Sinus tachy is also a mechanism which speeds up your heart if your blood pressure is a bit lower than it likes, to try and compensate. So, for example, if you're not drinking enough fluids to maintain blood pressure (dehydration), this can cause a faster rate. If your red blood cell count is lower than normal, this too can speed up your heart to get the lower levels of oxygen around the body faster.
