Mitral valve prolapse (MVP, oneway opening between upper and lower chamber) is an abnormal condition that relates to the valve leaflets not tightly closing when the left ventrical pumps and blood backflows into the upper chamber reducing the amount of blood pumped into circulation with each heartbeat.
MVP is quite common as the backflow is minor or trivial and there is no medical significance...the condition doesn't advance, no symptoms. However, if the backflow is significant (moderate to severe regurgitation) there may be intervention to correct. Often the repair can be done without open heart surgery. The procedure can be done by passing through the large artery and attaching a weight to the leaflet as an example.
