I have a lap band and I can only tell you that I think if you are dealing with A-fib, losing the weight can only help that situation not harm it. I had my lap band on June 28th of 2013 and I've lost 130 pounds, I was and still am overweight but I'm getting there. Do you wear a C-Pap machine when you sleep? If not, that is something else you should look into to help with the A-Fib now and after lap band. I can only tell you from my experience and the fact that I have mentored several other people through it now, that lap band is a great procedure and huge help to us who have tried everything else to lose weight. I don't know if there's a way for you to contact me direct from here (I don't really want to post my email address on a public forum) but I would be more than happy to talk to you about lap band all you want and hopefully answer your questions to get you going in the right direction to take your life back!!
Sorry you are having a rough time. I hope I didnt discourage you. I just get worried people forget the seriousness of some things and some doctors down play things. Anyway, please know whatever your decision, we all support you on here and wish you well.
Thanks everyone. It has crossed my mind that the weight may have cause my A-Fib. Since there is very little studies done on A-Fib yet alone with the lap band, its a guess.
Lisa, I have checked lap band forms. Little or no info? Maybe Im just not hitting on it right?
I have weighted the good with the bad on this, thats why I havent done it. A-Fib is so bad for me , the thought of it 24/7 would make me crazy! But, as Lisa said: " To me, if it meant extending my life an additional 20 years then I'd go for it"
Thats the one point why I keep trying.
I plan to ask both my Drs (Heart & lap-band ) more details.
Im just trying to get a grip on my life, with A-Fib & my weight, I feel out of out of control.
I have tried for a year with diet.. Unless I can get my heart rate up to burn more calories, the weight isnt comming off. I take meds for my A-fib, which keeps my HR low. ):
Sorry for the pity party , just trying to seek more knowledge to make a sound choice.
Thanks.
JRD
If its not clear then I would say dont do it.
Have you tried one of the lap band forums? could it be that being overweight has caused some of your AFib? very interesting questions though one I touched on in a couple of posts about obesity and arrhythmia's.
Hopefully someone has had it done but I'll check also in another spot I know.
LBS can be very beneficial to some patients and can give you the quality of life back that you once had or at least have a better one after the weight is gone so that it's easier to deal with health issues. I so admire Dr. Lee Grossbard; he's near where we used to live and I actually saw him once before he had his done many many years ago =)
To me, if it meant extending my life an additional 20 years then I'd go for it; it was the least invasive WLS last time I chatted with anyone about it, new technology & medicine make it safer every day. I'd ask your dr some specific questions and see what he thinks your case though and then decide if he thinks it's worth the risk involved.
good luck
Hmmm. I am not judging you should you go that route (Lap-Band), but I just dont like the whole idea. Its such a serious thing. I sure would like to see you re-consider, but I am not a doctor. I dont know anything about a-fib getting worse or not with that procedure though.
