My svt is always in the 130-170 range, I take Propanolol for it. I've been on it for 5 years, but so far it's been working. I did talk to one of the cardiologists nurses once who said that it's kind of 50-50% on them working long term tho. Half of the people can live with it, the other half will stop responding to meds and need the ablation.
I would definetely be getting a referal to a new cardiologist though. I hope you feel better.

Yes, definitely! Flecainide, Atenolol are often prescribed along with the aforementioned Metoprolol. I was on various dosages of Metoprolol for 6 years, but found it to be ineffective in preventing SVT episodes which happened about 3-5 time per month. At one point, I was on 200mg which is a pretty large dose. The med did make them earier to convert. I no longer experience SVT since my ablation, but still take a 50mg dose of Metoprolol to keep the BP in line.
Are you sure this is SVT? Do they start and stop abruptly? The reason I ask is rate of 140-160 are below what you'd typically find with SVT. Even 186 is on the lower end. Average rate usually run from 200-250, depending on respiration rate when it started.
I hope you can get a resolution. I'd find another cardiologist. It this is indeed SVT, it isn't good to be in it for 3 days.

have you tried metoprolol? that is a great medication for svt. if you are not anxious, and your heart rates are out of control and you are symptomatic, you could go to the ER. what does it feel like when your heart rate hits 186?
