Beta blockers vs ablation for pregnancy

Female, 29, (inappropriate?) sinus tachycardia for 2 1/2 years following a virus and viral thyroiditis, currently treated with bisoprolol (90-100 bpm resting, was 140+ resting prior to BB).

Bisoprolol is a Class C pregnancy drug - my GP has advised moving to a Class B drug and my cardio previously broached the subject of ablation.

If I wanted to get pregnant - is ablation worth thinking about in order to get off the beta blockers for the duration of the pregnancy?

I need to decide whether to discuss with my cardiologist in more depth.

Thanks.

Definitely talk to your doctor about it.  If it could be fixed with ablation, I would really try to get that done prior to starting a family.  I've read that pregnancy tends to make SVT symptoms more frequent.  Pregnancy made my arrhythmia issues much worse, but I don't  have SVT.  Your body will be under a lot of physical stress during pregnancy, so if something is wrong prior to that could be fixed, I'd do it.  If it can't be fixed, definitely figure out which beta blocker would be the best for pregnancy.  I asked about pregnancy on the anti-arrhythmic I'm on and the EP suggested if we decided on having another baby I should probably go off of the medication for the first trimester.  I'm not sure if they would suggest that you do that, but definitely ask.  I would ask the cardiologist and ask an OB/GYN.  Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. It is a constant tachycardia, no abnormal rhythms. Consistently elevated and rapidly increases with movement (walking up stairs for example). I will definitely talk it over with my doctors. My cardio said that ablation would be an option if the BB's didn't work. I have an appointment with some specialists next week.

I guess I'm just echoing the comment above me;  is your condition even subject to ablation?  If you suffered from SVT for instance, then I'd say absolutely, the procedure is well worth it if you wanted to start a family.  I'd say that's it very possible to have it done while you were pregnant.  But from how you describe your situation, I don't know if it's possible to get to your problem via that method.

How often do you have episodes or is your HR always elevated?

I know ablation can be very successful for things like SVT, not sure how it works for IST. Always a good thing to discuss with your cardio and get more information on so you can make a well informed decision.

I know many women who have stayed on a beta blocker for the duration of their pregnancy and had no problems.
