Blood thinners/family history of aneurysms

Hi Everyone,
I'm new to this forum and newly diagnosed with p. afib. I was so happy to find out that there are message boards out there that I can use to connect with others who have afib.

I saw a cardiologist for the first time two weeks ago.  He put me on Pradaxa 150 mg 2X a day.

Is there anyone on here who takes pradaxa/coumadin/other blood thinners who also has a family history of aneurysms? If so, did your doctor put you on a lower dose because of it?  Aneurysms run in my family (father, grandmother, great-grandmother, cousin, uncle).

I wasn't expecting to be put on blood thinners and I think at that point I started feeling so overwhelmed that my mind  just shut down.  I didn't even think to mention this while I was at the doctor's office and I'm wondering now if this is something significant that I should have mentioned to him.

Thank you so much.  I"m looking forward to learning a lot here.

I would definitely call the office and tell them of your family history and what you were prescribed to make sure it is safe for you.  There is nothing wrong with making a followup phone call if you have questions you failed to ask while you were in the office.  Especially where meds and their safety are concerned.  To be honest though I might think blood thinners may help prevent you from any aneurysms but it is best you contact your doctor to be sure.  Welcome to the boards.

Thank you so much.  I did call my doctor's office back and he said it was fine to be on blood thinners.  I've been on the Pradaxa about a month now and so far (knock on wood) I haven't experienced any side effects.

I'm learning a lot by reading old posts in this forum.  No one else in my family has afib and I really didn't know anything about it before I was diagnosed.
