Can withdrawl from oral decongestants and antihistamines cause palpitations?

I stopped taking antihistamines and oral decongestants about 4 weeks ago.  I have been on OTC for at least 15 years.  I took them quite often and it was RARE to not take them during the week.  A week after I stopped taking them I started developing palpitations.

Recently I have been having sjogrens like symptoms and thought maybe the antihismines were drying me out.  So I stopped cold turkey,

3 weeks ago (about a week after I stopped) I developed heart palpitations.  I am on a 30 day event monitor and have had a stress/echo, which turned out normal.  I awaiting the results of my event monitor, but last time I called they said PVCs with a little bit higher heart rate (108), but that was while I was walking around.

I am 41 years old and about 20 pounds over weight.  I have fibromyalgia type symptoms with +ANA and +ACA and recently an elevated c reactive protein level.

Thank you kindly.

Susan

It might be that your antihistamine usage was keeping your overall histamine levels low. When you came off, the histamine in your body spiked. Maybe a food you are eating etc. I have suffered from palpitations and find that it is due to certain foods that raise my histamine levels. So, I take an antihistamine to knock the levels back down to where my heart stops palpitating.

Thank you Cindy.  I saw my holistic Dr (who is an actual MD) on Wednesday and he actually said he has seen this before.  He seemed to think that within 3 weeks my palpitations should be gone and I should be back to normal.  Of course this is what I am hoping for.

I am still a bit skeptical, but it does seem to make sense.  I was just wondering if anyone else has heard of such a thing.  I will ask my cardiologist when I go for a follow up too.

I will keep you posted on my findings.  Thank you for posting your comments/thoughts to me Cindy.

Hi and Happy Thanksgiving....i don't know about having the issues after you've stopped the OTC's...you usually hear about issues while you are on them because of the ingredients that are in them...the only thought that i would have is that since you were on them for so long that your heart recoginized the fact that it had to adapt to the way it had changed while it was on the meds and then possibly when you stopped taking them your heart reverted back to what was the norm for you.  I wouldn't think that what you were on would mask any symtoms...just that it could change the electrical and the way that your heart fires off.  I think that the thirty day monitor will give you the telling tale here....good luck with this...i would be interested in knowing what the doctors findings would be and their take on this.....
