Colonoscopy and PVCs

Okay I know its a weird question, but I KNOW my doctor is going to send me for this darned test.  I'm a little uptight about it (for obvious reasons) but I'm also a little concerned because I know they knock you out for it.  I haven't been put under since I was 6 for tonsils so I guess I'm paranoid thatmy heart will go nuts during the test or while I'm under or something...

I know its not a real rational fear but...that coupled with the thought of the test itself has me a little edgy...

Has anyone gone throught this ...any suggestions?  any PVCs before/during/after??  Any problems with the anaesthesia??
Thank you!!!!!

I've seen this question on this board a couple of times.  I've never seen anyone say it made their heart worse.  Personally, I've been sedated for procedures with the same medication they typically use for colonoscopies (Versed) and for me the medication made my heart feel better, not worse.

I hear ya...."BRING ON THE DRUGS....!!"  Having that test without some type of sedation was NOT an option for me...LOL.  My aunt is a surgical nurse (retired) and she said versed is a wonderful medication that allows doctors and patients to be more comfortable during procedures.  She said the difference in patient comfort since the introduction of versed is amazing!

As for the meds, I was on antiarrythmics at the time of my colonscopy and did not have to stop taking them....thank goodness.

I love the reference to type A PVCers...too funny!!  We should have an acronym for that....PVC-A : )

Good luck with the appointment and the test.  It's not bad at all (with the meds....lol)

On a follow up, I'm on Atenolol 25mg 1x daily.  Do you guys know if you need to be off the B-blocker for the procedure or anything.
I haven't even had the initial consult yet but you know us type A PVCers are always looking ahead for trouble and I assume (pun intended) that they'll be ordering the test.

And I give a LOT of credit to you jkfrench but....BRING ON THE DRUGS when it comes to THAT test...

if they use versed ( i think they do?) you have nothing to fear. i didnt have any PVCs afterwards at all (no anxiety either for that matter). I would worry more about the very very very remote chance of puncturing the colon than i would about pvc increasing because of ver-sed.

possibly, but not in my case.....It was just a comment to let him know he had choices if he was a worried as I was.

Personally, I think that my body's reaction to the pain would cause more problems with adrenaline and PVC's then the drugs would.  Just an observation....

Hi There~
Well this is the same question I posted back in January.  I'm 47 years old and had a colonoscopy.  I was scared to DEATH that I would have a reaction to the versed/fentanyl cocktail.  SO...I didn't get it.  I had the colonoscopy without sedation and although it wasn't a walk in the park I was really glad I could just get up and go home.  I'm only 106 lbs and being so tiny it was extra hard pushing that hose up there.  There were only a few moments of really bad bad pain but then once he reached the top, it was a breeze pulling the thing out.  I don't have to go back for 10 years, but when I do, I will do it without sedation again.  My doctor told me more and more people are asking for the procedure without getting the drugs.  Just another option for you.  Ont the other hand, my cardio told me that the Versed will NOT bother my pvc's, pac's or PAT.  I just was too damn scared to believe him.

I also had an endoscopy and was put out and this is when I was real new to having the PVC's AND my doctor had just up'd my dosage of meds, so I was really nervous.  The anest. asked me all kinds of questions and I told him about my PVC's and then he injected the medicine in my IV and I was like "uh-oh, I'm going to sleep" and I kept trying to fight it, but within 3 seconds I was out.  When I woke up I was like "thank you Jesus."  It was so easy and I did have one palp while lying in the bed, but it was no biggie.  I wasn't even sleepy later on that day.

I totally understand your concern, it's scary to be put under, but it's usually for no more than 10-30 minutes.  I have to get my gallbladder out and I have been pushing the date back since last year because of my fear.  Ugh.  Hang in there!

I didn't have a colonoscopy, but I was put under for an endoscopy recently.  I did not have ANY problem with the medication causing PVC's or any other noticeable reaction.  I was tired and slept the rest of the day...that's it (probably one of the best things for the PVC's).

Thanks for bumping up the thread finetilthree!!

Yep, I had a colonoscopy on June 30, 2003 (yep, I remember the exact day...hahah!)  At the time, I was having over 20,000 PVCs/day and was dealing with cardiomyopathy.  Like you guys, I thought...this is it!  I'm going tach-out during a colonscopy!!  I was so nervous!  My first ablation wasn't until August of that year, so because I was so worried, I set up an appointment to meet with the doctor who was going to do the colonscopy!  He couldn't understand my fear (I didn't care!!).  I made it known I wanted to be monitored during the test, whether it was procedure or not.

Anyway, they used versed for the test and I was absolutely fine!  I had no problems whatsoever.  I hope that helps.

I'm bumping this up for you.  There are several people here that have had this done and the meds have actually calmed their PVCs.  Hopefully they will chime in soon.  I know Momto3 will be one:)

PVC man,

Oh boy! I'm right there with you! Mine is coming in April and I can't even think about it.
I called my cardio last week when my GP informed me that I needed to start getting one every 5 years, (Grandma passed away from colon cancer) and he told me I'd be fine and to stop worrying because they usually only do twilight sleep.
Just inform the anesthesiologist before the procedure about your history and he'll pay  extra special attention your heart.
My Cardio seems to think that the versed or whatever the drug of choice is, will actually help calm the PVC's....at least for the day.  I'm also thankful that I won't remember a thing!!  What a terrible thing it is to age and have to go thru, and just think of the guy on the other end of the stick! Who in the world goes to school for 12 years to have that kind of a job!  ;)

Warm regards, hope everything has been well for you and yours!
