I've been having the same symptoms for a while now, but have been exasterbated now that I'm pregnent. I went to my family doctor and she told me to take my allergy nose spray, if that didn't work. I should go to an ear nose throat specialist. However today I went to my OBGYN for my first check up and the doctor immediately heard an irregular heartbeat, so significant that he scheduled me a cardiologist appointment for later this week. I think the ear and the irregular heartbeak are related. Did you find anything out?
Samantha wondering if you did any follow up to your symptoms? I'm wondering because the current symptoms I am having are very similar to what you have posted. I have gone to a Ear nose and throat specialist and have had test for vertigo, inner ear etch. They were all with in normal limits.??? so I am now thinking I should have my carotid arteries tested. Process of elimination. Just wondering if you have gotten any answers
I know your post an older one - but did you ever get yours resolved? I'm asking because I have the same issues. Hope you are feeling well and everything is o.k. Pam
Anemia and thyroid issues can cause this as well. I have it right now due to anemia.
I have this too and it is very important that you go to the doctor. Sometimes it happens just because a blood vessel is close to the bone near the ear and is completely harmless.
But it is potentially very harmful. It is called pulsatile tinnitus or pulse synchronous tinnitus and it is something completely different from tinnitus. So don't mix them up. Tinnitus is harmless but pulsatile tinnitus is not.
First it must be established if the noise is venous or arterial. If it is arterial the most common cause is a dural fistula, if it is venous the most common cause is intracranial hypertension. Both can have devastating effects if left untreated.
It is not an emergency but it should be checked. An MRA is mandatory.
If it suddenly disappears it is an emergency because that means that the blood suddenly takes another way, which could be lethal. And this warrants a visit to the ER.
A good doc and a MRA is a good start.
I have had this for many years and I didn't care about it. Last week I mentioned it to my doc and it started a whole new ballgame. I didn't know it was important..
If it is established as harmless, then beta blockers can help you by improving cerebral blood flow, not only by calming down your heart.
Also, be careful after you finish each ear. You'll notice when you lift your head that feel unsteady, it's because flushing your ears out causes your equilibrium to be temporarily thrown off. You'll want to lay right down for a few moments after each ear to let this wear off.
